Across India’s poorest neighbourhoods, too many children carry bricks and bundles instead of books. At Academe India Foundation, we believe the surest way to end child labour is to put a child back in the classroom.
The trap of poverty
When a family cannot afford the next meal, a child’s wages — however small — can feel impossible to give up. This is how the cycle of child labour begins: poverty forces children to work, work keeps them out of school, and the lack of education keeps them poor as adults. Their own children then face the same fate.
Breaking this cycle needs more than good intentions. It needs a reason for parents to choose school over work, and a school that a poor child can actually attend.
What we do differently
Our approach removes the barriers one by one. We open free tuition and learning centres inside the communities we serve, so distance and cost are never an excuse. We provide books, uniforms and a daily mid-day meal — because a fed child learns, and a meal is often what convinces a family to send their child to us.
